the origin of

CYPHER

The cypher is a sacred space rooted in ring shout which was cultivated through African cultures during the Atlantic slave trade and through Native American tribes. The blend of these cultures allowed for the inspiration and creation of dance and expression. The cypher, also referred to as the circle, is built by the people that shape the circle. It is a space of socialization to promote love and support for those inside of the cypher. The dance journey can be incredibly tough, scary, uncertain, frustrating, and lonely.

At Cypher Rehab and Performance Training, you are at the center of the cypher and we are the individuals that maintain the shape of the circle. Choosing the name Cypher is to pay homage to the origins of hip hop and to embody the sense of community for dancers. Cypher Rehab and Performance Training will act as a medium for street dancers to receive the physical care they deserve to dance with longevity, safety, and execution stronger than before.

About Dean Sosa

Hey there, I'm Dean! I'm a physical therapist and strength coach who works with artist-athletes of various dance artforms. A little bit about me:

  • I graduated from Saint Joseph’s University in May 2020. Since then, I've had the pleasure of working with recreational dancers and professional dancers to help them return to dance safely

  • I’m also a dancer with over 10 years of experience. My dance identity is inspired by breaking, hip hop freestyle, house, popping, and waving

  • I was a member of Strictly Funk Dance Company at the University of Pennsylvania and currently a member of Synrgy Dance Collective based in Santa Barbara California

I’m always amazed at how the skill level in dance continues to get higher and higher. As dance gets more complex, it's important to take good care of our bodies. My job is to teach dancers how to stay strong and healthy so that they can stay on the dance floor and enhance their performance ability.
